L'ancien ministre central des finances, M. Pranab Mukherjee dans une réunion organisée à New Delhi le 13 juin 2012, a examiné le rendement des sociétés d'assurance du secteur public, y compris LIC, GIC Re et Agriculture Insurance Company of India Limited durant l'exercice 2011-2012.

Pranab Mukherjee dans une réunion organisée à New Delhi le 13 juin 2012, a examiné le rendement des sociétés d'assurance du secteur public, y compris LIC, GIC Re et Agriculture Insurance Company of India Limited durant l'exercice 2011-2012. The CEOs of the insurancecompanies including the Life Insurance Corporation of India and General Insurance Corporation of India were present on the occasion.

In his address to the CEOs, Mr. Mukherjee said that ‘the insurance sector has been contributing immenselyto the infrastructure development of the country.’ He, however, expressed concern over the fact that ‘the Indian general insurance non-life sector market is structurally challenged in terms of profitability’. He said that India is the only country in Asia with a combined ratio of 105 and above consistently during the last 5 years’.

Mr. Pranab Mukherjee however, complimented the public sector insurance companies in reaching out tothe people in far-flung areas. He said that there is need to cover all the remaining un-served areas especially district headquarters. He emphasised on the need to take the e-governance routefor this purpose and enable good corporate governance in the industry. He stressed on achieving a balance between growth and profitability and said that our strategy in coming years should be guided accordingly. Speaking about Reinsurance, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said that ‘reinsurance is an integral part of the insurance sector and GIC Re is the sole Indian reinsurer in the country. While the loss of ` 2490 crores during 2011-12 is largely attributable to the natural catastrophes in Japan and Thailand and also due to the provisioning on account of motor pool, the larger policy issue of minimization of exposure risk, diversification of risk, due diligence while assessing the country specific risk etc remains and I am sure GIC Re is making all necessary efforts in this direction’.

GIC Re has in the capacity of a FDI partner, associated with established Bhutanese promoters (who have also promoted companies in the manufacturing sector and also a bank) for formation of the maiden reinsurance company in Bhutan...

In addition to meeting the various Nepalese insurers, team GIC Re also met senior officials including Prof. Dr.Fatta Bahadur K.C. Chairman,of Nepal Beema Samiti, the Nepalese Insurance Regulator. Mr. Roy also addressed the Nepal Insurers Association. In his speech CMD – GIC Re informed about GIC Re's financial results for 2011-12. He emphasised on the fact that GIC Re valued its relationship with Nepal and is dedicated to the development of Nepal Insurance Market. He also explained the need of introduction of Event Limits on account of Solvency II regulations. Mr. Roy offered a strategic partnership with Nepal, for exchange of technical knowledge and underwriting skills for a period of about 3 years.

The 8th International Risk Management Conference was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 19th and 20th of April this year. This is an annual event that brings together insurers, reinsurers, risk managers, bankers, academicians and corporate representatives on a single platform.

Mr Savio Fernandes, Chief Manager and GIC Re Moscow office representative, Mr Vichar Bhatt represented the Corporation at the Conference.

There were more than 300 participants from various countries in the Conference that focussed on the global economic situation and financial trends.

GIC Re is a familiar name in Kazakhstan insurance industry. The local insurers and brokers evinced keen interest in the rating and financial position of GIC Re.

The Kazakhs are warm and friendly by nature and the GIC Re team had meaningful discussions with the various companies and also the local representatives of brokers.
